African solidarity e-session on the political situation in Senegal on Monday 12 June
AfricTivistes and the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the African Union are organising a “Solidarity e-session on the political situation in Senegal” this Monday 12 June 2023 at 10am (GMT).
The aim of this session is to brief participants on the crisis in the country, identify the issues at stake, discuss key points and make recommendations. This will allow African civil society to be more proactive and take a stand as early as possible on issues of governance, peace and security in Africa. More specifically, the session will provide an opportunity to contribute ideas and insights to the efforts to safeguard the country’s democratic gains by involving African civil society and continental institutions.
The Solidarity e-session will address main sub-themes:
– Senegalese democracy: the current state of affairs after two democratic changes of political leadership
– Shrinking civic spaces in the run-up to elections/censorship and Internet blackouts
– 2024 presidential election: guaranteeing a peaceful, transparent, inclusive and independent electoral process
– Safeguarding the rule of law with the effective participation of citizens.
The highlights and recommendations made during the session will be compiled in a declaration that ECOSOCC and AfricTivistes will submit to the relevant departments and political bodies of the African Union in order to encourage these bodies to take action to support the consolidation of democratic gains and for the protection of citizens.
