AfricTivistes is a pan-African organisation that promotes and defends democratic values, human rights and good governance through civic tech. Formerly known as the union of bloggers and web-activists from across the continent to promote and defend democracy, AfricTivistes has created a network of change agents in Africa with the aim of fostering collective intelligence in the face of the major challenges holding back democracy and unity on the continent. The organisation aims to empower African citizens to become active players in building their societies and holding their governments accountable. The network uses a variety of strategies and tools including, digital infrastructure development, research, designing innovative media, social media campaigns, advocacy initiatives, capacity building workshops and community mobilisation.

Officially established in 2015, AfricTivistes is a civil society organisation that operates across all African countries and is headquartered in Dakar, Senegal. Its commitment is focused on the “Consolidation of Democracy”, both at national level and on the continent. One of the fundamental principles of AfricTivistes is the belief in the importance of African voices and perspectives. The network seeks to amplify these voices and promote a more endogenous, inclusive and diverse narrative to address the continent’s challenges. AfricTivistes actively strives to achieve enhanced citizenship through real, participatory democracy, centred on cyber-democracy and E-governance. To this end, AfricTivistes implements development and citizen engagement projects in African political systems in order to effectively anchor democratic culture. It also emphasises the use of non-violent and peaceful means to advocate change. The organisation promotes dialogue, collaboration and civic engagement as key drivers of social transformation.

AfricTivistes is a watchdog for democracy, monitoring political leaders’ actions and the fulfilment of their commitments in order to encourage transparency and good governance. In addition to being a strong force for protest, it is also a force for proposals that promotes the commendable efforts of political players as well as the achievements of civil society. The organisation is dedicated to intervening directly or advocating for the involvement of actors in the various processes of political and social change.

In the course of its existence, AfricTivistes has gained insight into present-day challenges in a fast-changing environment. The organisation continuously adapts by developing structuring projects focusing on human rights, participatory democracy, good governance, digital sovereignty and online security, as well as strengthening information quality in the digital age.

Through its network of activists, AfricTivistes has organised numerous initiatives and campaigns on a wide range of priorities, and has also collaborated with other civil society organisations, government and intergoverment institutions and international partners to achieve its objectives.
