[Guinea] Arrests of members of Guinean civil society: Warnings and concerns over abuses and violations of civil liberties!

During the night of 9 to 10 July 2024, the National Coordinator of the National Front for the Defence of the Constitution (FNDC), Oumar Sylla ‘Foninké Mengué’, and the FNDC’s head of branches and mobilisation, Mamadou Bilo Bah, were arrested and detained in Guinea by hooded soldiers.
72 hours after their arrests, their lawyers and families have no information about their detention. No authority has provided a legal justification for these arrests.
According to the FNDC, they are reportedly being held in a special forces military camp, where they face the risk of inhuman treatment.
AfricTivistes has joined forces with other civil society and human rights organisations to condemn these acts in the strongest possible terms and demand their immediate and unconditional release,
In this statement, we also call on the authorities to put an end to these excesses and abuses and to ensure that citizens’ fundamental rights are respected during this period of transition.
Finally, we call on the authorities to put an end to these abuses and to respect fundamental freedoms, in particular freedom of expression, which is being violated by the closure of media outlets.”
