AfricTivistes Femmes Cybersécurité

Pan-African

Objective(s)

To train women journalists, media professionals and human rights defenders on issues relating to cybersecurity, digital auditing and combating online harassment, and to launch a major advocacy and awareness-raising campaign.

Overview

AfricTivistes Women in Cybersecurity is a programme comprising two cybersecurity training courses for 18 participants from Senegal and the DRC, the implementation of practical projects by the trainees, and a major advocacy and awareness-raising campaign against online harassment of girls and women. It builds on the pioneering Afrique Média Cybersécurité (AMC) programme launched by AfricTivistes in 2017.

Context

With the rise in internet connectivity, cyberbullying is affecting an increasing number of internet users, the majority of whom are women. In Senegal, for example, 70% of cyberbullying victims are female and 65% are aged between 16 and 35. Female journalists and human rights defenders are particularly vulnerable, which limits their full participation in the continent’s digital development.

Approach

The programme is structured around three complementary components: Safe Sisters (face-to-face and online training on cybersecurity and combating gender-based harassment), Tech Sisters (advanced technical skills training and digital auditing), and Taxaw Temm (an awareness-raising and advocacy campaign with a dedicated web platform).
