Afrique Media Lab

Pan-African

Objective(s)

The project aims to build the capacity of information professionals through technical training on methods for researching, verifying and processing information using digital tools.

Overview

Afrique Media Lab is an innovation and media capacity-building initiative run by AfricTivistes. The programme is aimed at journalists, bloggers, community media organisations and civil society actors working in the media sector. It aims to promote the use of digital tools in investigative reporting, the production of high-quality news content and journalistic investigation.

Context

Developed as part of the four-year AfricTivistes programme (2019–2022), the project addresses a number of structural challenges: the proliferation of fake news, the lack of fact-checking of content shared on social media, the limited technical capacity of some media organisations in the field of digital investigation, and the need to improve access to reliable and credible information.

Approach

The approach is based on three complementary strands. Empowering the media and information stakeholders through training in digital investigative techniques, online journalism and combating fake news. Developing tools to facilitate access to information, notably a collaborative platform to combat fake news and a map of institutional sources. Establishing a network of stakeholders, including a local task force to combat fake news and a citizen oversight committee.
