Hackathon #Innov4Democracy

Pan-African

Objective(s)

To encourage innovation and the development of new and creative digital solutions in order to promote democratic governance, particularly at local level, and to support the implementation of the CADEG through civic tech.

Overview

The #Innov4Democracy Hackathon is a pan-African digital innovation competition designed to stimulate the creation of technological solutions that promote democratic governance and the implementation of the CADEG. Web platforms and mobile applications were developed to encourage citizen participation, improve access to public information and promote youth involvement in electoral processes. The highlight was the final event held on 21 and 22 May 2024 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where Madagascar’s Isika project won the competition.

CONTEXT

At a time when the exercise of democracy and good governance faces major challenges in Africa, and when the implementation of the CADEG remains inadequate in several African Union member states, the hackathon aims to harness digital technologies to provide effective solutions to the continent’s democratic challenges.

APPROACH

The selection process took place in several stages: a call for applications open to all African citizens, the shortlisting of 10 projects by a panel of experts, a public vote accounting for 50% of the final result, followed by a pitch to a jury during the final in Abidjan. The five winners, designated as “Charter Fellows”, each received a grant of €5,000 as well as four months of technical support.
