Burkina FasoNigerSénégalTchad

Objective(s)

To explore how digital technology can become a powerful ally in the fight against inequality in the Sahel, by highlighting the challenges of accessing essential services and showcasing local citizen-led initiatives to inspire action and promote fairer and more inclusive public policies.

Overview

“Sahel for Equality: Digital Technology in the Service of Reducing Inequality” is a documentary film produced by AfricTivistes as part of the Sahel Insight project. Through poignant interviews with development experts, members of civil society, local authorities, young people affected by inequality, Sahel activists and social entrepreneurs, the film highlights the stark disparities in access to essential services in Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso and Senegal. Released on 5 October 2024, it is available at film.africtivistes.org.

CONTEXT

The Sahel is a region of climatic and ecological transition characterised by profound social and economic inequalities in access to education, healthcare, electricity and drinking water. The region is also plagued by political instability and the threat posed by terrorist groups. These inequalities are often exacerbated by inadequate public policies and a lack of budgetary transparency.

APPROACH

The film combines art and activism to offer a vision of hope and resilience for the people of the Sahel. It highlights the specific challenges facing each country whilst emphasising the similarities in their struggles and solutions, particularly those championed by the Sahel Activists. Designed as a powerful advocacy tool, it is being distributed through local and international media, accompanied by a digital communication campaign to maximise its impact.
