Seminar on Information and Democracy

Sénégal

Objective(s)

To foster an inclusive and responsible digital information environment in order to strengthen democracy and citizen participation in Senegal. To bring together key stakeholders from civil society, government, the media and the ICT sector to address the challenges of the digital age.

Overview

Presentation

AfricTivistes, in partnership with the Forum on Information and Democracy, organised a seminar in Dakar on 24 and 25 October 2023, bringing together experts, researchers, media professionals, government representatives and civil society actors. Through a series of panel discussions, debates and round-table sessions, the event produced the Dakar Memorandum on Information and Democracy.

Context

Democracy in Senegal is going through a difficult period, characterised by challenges in managing information in the digital age, a pre-election political crisis, the rise of disinformation, and restrictions on freedom of expression. Journalists are facing difficulties in carrying out their work, and citizens are being prosecuted for posts on social media.

Approach

National and international experts presented case studies, research and best practices in the fields of media development, digital innovation and transparency of information, with a particular focus on media literacy as a bulwark against disinformation.
