[Senegal] AfricTivistes and five other organisations demand light be shed on assaullt of journalist Maimouna Ndour Faye
Human rights organizations ARTICLE 19 Senegal and West Africa, Amnesty International Senegal, the Senegalese League for Human Rights (LSDH), the African Meeting for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO), AfrikaJom Center and AfricTivistes strongly condemn the physical assault against the journalist and Director of the television channel 7TV, Maimouna Ndour Faye. We demand that an investigation be conducted so that the perpetrators are identified and held accountable before the court in a fair trial.
Maimouna Ndour Faye, a journalist and Director of the private television channel 7TV, was brutally assaulted and stabbed on Thursday, February 29, 2024. She was admitted to a local hospital for treatment. We express our solidarity with Maimouna Ndour Faye and wish her a speedy recovery.
This knife attack, whose perpetrator remains unknown, occurred in front of the victim’s home as she returned from work after her show “Face à MNF” with a member of parliament.
It is important to note that this assault is part of a series of attacks against journalists and media in recent years, most of which have gone unpunished.
Let us recall that the resolution adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council on October 6, 2020 on the safety of journalists calls on states to ensure accountability through the conduct of impartial, prompt, thorough, independent, and effective investigations into all alleged acts of violence, threats, and attacks against journalists and media workers.
