AfricTivistes introduces online citizen consultation to bring Africans closer to AU institutions

AfricTivistes has developed a pan-African online citizens’ consultation as part of the Charter Project Africa. The aim of this initiative is to gather ideas, recommendations and suggestions from African citizens on five themes linked to democratic governance on the continent.
This pan-African citizen consultation will enable the Charter Project Africa consortium to gather a diversity of views and opinions in the form of contributions from African citizens, in particular young people, civil society and activists, throughout its implementation. These contributions will be shared with national, regional and continental policy-makers to inform debate and decision-making.
This initiative fosters exchanges between civil society, the African Governance Platform (AGA) and the institutions of the African Union, highlighting innovative approaches and initiatives to promote democratic governance.
The five main themes of the consultation are Human rights: Freedom of expression and access to public information, the Principle of separation of powers, the Participatory democracy and inclusive governance, Constitutionalism and presidential term limits and the Participation of youth and women in political institutions.
The citizens’ consultation is open to all Africans, making the exercise interactive and inclusive.
To make your voice heard, you can contribute in writing in French and English. Beyond written submissions, African citizens also have the opportunity to comment on the various topics already discussed on open and participatory media such as podcasts, videos, and on Twitter Space….
Feel free to submit your ideas and recommendations by taking part in this online citizen consultation on: charter.africa
About AfricTivistes
AfricTivistes is a pan-African organisation based in Dakar. It federates the continent’s change makers to promote and defend democratic values, human rights and good governance through the digital tools and technologies. Launched in November 2015, AfricTivistes is a watchdog for democracy in all African countries. As such, it is committed to directly engage or advocating for the involvement of actors in the various processes of political and social change. It conducts and pilots projects to develop and involve citizens in democratic systems. Naturally, it develops strategies to monitor political leaders and ensure that they carry out their actions and promises in order to encourage transparency and good governance. It is a platform for enhanced citizenship in Africa.
About the Charter Project Africa
The Charter Project Africa supports AU member states fulfilling their commitments as outlined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG). The project encourages the use of civic technology to boost citizen voices, particularly those of underrepresented groups. To achieve this, the project offers both financial and technical resources in the form of grants, expertise, and networks to initiatives in democracy at national level in 11 countries, as well as at the regional and continental levels. The project builds connections between citizens and civic society, analysing the ACDEG’s role in achieving positive change. The project is implemented by a consortium of six African and European organisations namely, AfricTivistes, Code for Africa (CfA), Democracy Works Foundation (DWF), Gorée Institute, European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM) and the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD).
