AfricTivistes Civic Engagement Tour (ACET)

Pan-AfricanSénégalGambieGuinée-BissauMauritanie

Objective(s)

To equip young African leaders with skills in civic leadership, digital citizenship and content creation, with a view to increasing civic engagement and promoting social transformation through digital technology.

Overview

The AfricTivistes Civic Engagement Tour (ACET) is the operational, travelling component of the AfricTivistes Civic Engagement Programme. This pan-African capacity-building workshop programme, focused on civic leadership, was co-developed with a consortium of 11 organisations in Senegal, before being rolled out across West Africa in the form of a train-the-trainer programme. It aligns with AfricTivistes CitizenLab, of which it constitutes the “travelling arm”, enabling it to train young people directly in their own regions.

CONTEXT

In response to the low levels of civic engagement among young people in Africa and the growing influence of digital tools as a means of fostering engagement, AfricTivistes has developed ACET to create a generation of young trainers capable of disseminating civic leadership tools and methodologies within their respective communities.

APPROACH

The programme is based on four-day workshops centred around three pillars: civic leadership (community engagement and advocacy techniques), digital citizenship (the rights, duties and responsibilities of digital citizens) and content creation (crafting powerful narratives to mobilise public opinion). The West Africa phase is structured as a train-the-trainer programme — 50 master trainers equipped to replicate the skills acquired locally.
