Objective(s)
To assess the performance of generative AI tools in addressing democratic and electoral challenges, with a view to alerting citizens, decision-makers and platforms to the risks of disinformation associated with the use of chatbots during election periods.

Overview
Conducted in April 2025 and published on 21 August 2025, this joint study by AfricTivistes and Democracy Reporting International (DRI) assesses the ability of five generative AI chatbots to answer questions about the Senegalese parliamentary elections held on 17 November 2024. It serves as a warning to citizens at a time when many African countries are entering the election season.
CONTEXT
In an increasingly digital electoral landscape, artificial intelligence is shaping access to information. However, none of the chatbots tested were able to incorporate recent developments in the Senegalese political context, revealing a structural inability to update themselves in real time. Some even provided false information with great confidence, posing a serious risk of misinformation.
APPROACH
The study tested five generative AI tools (Copilot, Gemini, ChatGPT-4o, ChatGPT-4omini and Claude) on 14 questions in French and Wolof concerning the Senegalese parliamentary elections. The analysis was based on three criteria: accuracy, consistency and comprehensiveness of the responses.
