Objective(s)

To establish a network of experts on leadership, civic engagement and social transformation; to produce and publish studies on new forms of civic engagement in Africa; and to document the evolution of the Revolution 2.0 and augmented citizenship.

Overview

Cadre CTRL — the African Centre for Research on Citizenship — is a strategic initiative aimed at documenting, theorising and sustaining civic engagement, digital democracy and social movements in Africa. Between 2000 and 2020, a number of organisations and youth movements came to the public’s attention through their involvement in democratic struggles. Cadre CTRL aims to document all these initiatives, integrate them into academic and educational approaches, and establish them as a reference heritage for the continent.

CONTEXT

Through digital activism, generations of young Africans have led advocacy campaigns and initiatives aimed at strengthening rights and freedoms, successfully engaging many citizens in public affairs. Yet these initiatives remain poorly documented and under-theorised. Cadre CTRL addresses this gap by creating a reference centre to consolidate, bring together and share the expertise of African researchers, change-makers and innovators.

APPROACH

The programme is structured around four complementary areas: action research (thematic studies and policy briefs), the documentation base (digital library and resource centre on participatory democracy), academic support (research grants for young African researchers) and academic events (annual international conference on digital democracy).
