To gather ideas and recommendations from African citizens on five themes related to democratic governance, with a view to influencing public policy at national, regional and continental levels.
Overview
The Pan-African Citizens’ Consultation invites all African citizens — particularly young people, women and civil society actors — to share their views on five key themes of democratic governance as set out in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (CADEG).
Context
Africa faces challenges in democratic governance: the erosion of fundamental freedoms, constitutional tampering, coups d’état, and the marginalisation of young people and women within political institutions. The CADEG, adopted in 2007 and which came into force in 2012, remains largely unimplemented by member states. Digital technologies have opened up new spaces for public discourse, which this consultation aims to structure and amplify.
Approach
Through an online platform and interactive activities (webinars, podcasts, videos, Twitter/X Spaces), citizens’ contributions are collected, analysed and shared with decision-makers at the level of the Regional Economic Communities and the African Union.
