Farafina Elections

Pan-African

Objective(s)

To centralise and make accessible African electoral data — legal, technical and demographic — in order to strengthen electoral integrity, transparency and informed citizen participation.

Overview

Farafina — which means ‘Africa’ in Mandinka — is the first comprehensive online platform dedicated to elections and electoral processes in Africa. It brings together demographic data, compiles information on the electoral systems of the 54 African countries, tracks developments in electoral legal frameworks, and offers a data visualisation system featuring country-specific fact sheets.

CONTEXT

Africa is facing an unprecedented crisis of confidence in democracy. Electoral processes are marred by a lack of transparency, low turnout, misinformation and the failure to implement electoral recommendations. The fragmentation, inaccessibility and outdated nature of electoral data constitute a major obstacle to informed civic participation and significantly limit civil society’s capacity for action.

APPROACH

Farafina offers four main features: a comprehensive directory of demographic data by country; aggregated information on the electoral systems of 54 African countries; ongoing monitoring of the electoral legal framework; and a data visualisation system comprising detailed country fact sheets. The platform is aimed at civil society organisations, citizen observers, electoral authorities, political actors and partners.
