Objective(s)
To raise awareness among African populations about the impact of excessive presidential terms by encouraging citizen participation in the development of democratic states, through research projects, an awareness-raising campaign and an online platform.

Overview
The AfricTivistes Democracy Observatory is a citizen-led forum dedicated to addressing a range of interconnected issues relating to democracy in Africa. It will focus on addressing diverse and complex issues, ranging from the impact of digital technologies on democracy to the problem of hyper-presidentialism in certain countries, including the opening up of civic space and restrictive legal frameworks.
CONTEXT
In Africa, constitutional amendments relating to presidential terms of office are a source of instability and security threats. Heads of state tamper with constitutions to seek additional terms or grant themselves life terms. The phenomena of hyper-presidentialism, constitutional coups and military coups pose a serious threat to the future of democracy on the continent.
APPROACH
The 2024 Observatory is structured around three complementary components: research projects entrusted to teams of African researchers on the challenges of democratic governance, a public awareness and advocacy campaign, and an online platform to disseminate the findings and stimulate public debate. Each edition focuses on a specific theme and produces a collective reference work.
Project evolution
The progressive deployment of the project across countries and partners.
