Sénégal : Victoire de la démocratie

Sénégal

Objective(s)

To document the political and civic events that shaped Senegal between 2021 and 2024, to highlight the Senegalese people’s commitment to upholding democratic values, to preserve the collective memory, and to inspire reflection on democracy and civic participation in Africa.

Overview

“Victory for Democracy: Lessons from Senegal” is the second documentary film in the “Senegal: One Power, Two Terms” project, released on 18 November 2024. Running for 50 minutes, it highlights the democratic resilience of the Senegalese people in the face of the political and social tensions that characterised the years 2021 to 2024. Through testimonies from citizens, journalists, civil society actors, politicians and opinion leaders, it traces the citizen mobilisations and mechanisms that enabled Senegal to preserve its democratic balance in a regional context marked by instability.

CONTEXT

Between 2021 and 2024, Senegal went through a period of intense political tension — protests, arrests of opposition figures, debates over a third presidential term, and polarisation of public discourse. Despite this tense climate, institutions, citizen mobilisation, the media, civil society organisations and young people played a decisive role in safeguarding the democratic process. In a West African context weakened by coups d’état and democratic backsliding, Senegal has emerged as a symbol of democratic resistance and peaceful transition of power.

APPROACH

The documentary takes an immersive and educational approach, combining first-hand accounts, audiovisual archives and footage of protests, analysis from experts, journalists and activists, and a narrative focused on civic engagement and the defence of freedoms. The aim is to make democratic issues accessible to a wide audience — particularly young people — whilst highlighting the civic initiatives that have helped to preserve Senegal’s stability.
