AfricTivistes Champions of Governance and Democracy

Objective(s)

To strengthen democracy, the rule of law and human rights in Africa by promoting and upholding the fundamental principles of CADEG, by recognising an individual or organisation that has had a transformative impact on democratisation processes between 2012 and 2023.

Overview

The AfricTivistes Champion of Governance and Democracy Award is a citizen-led, open award designed to honour an African public figure or institution that has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to democratic principles and good governance, as defined in the CADEG.

CONTEXT

Since the CADEG came into force in 2012, the member states of the African Union have faced persistent challenges in its effective implementation. Between August 2020 and August 2023, seven countries experienced military coups, whilst others underwent unconstitutional changes of power. Against this backdrop of democratic backsliding, this initiative aims to celebrate and amplify commendable efforts in support of democratic governance on the continent.

APPROACH

The selection process consists of three stages: an advisory committee to approve the terms of reference; a selection committee comprising experts and representatives of African civil society to draw up the criteria and propose nominees; and a six-month public vote allowing African citizens to help determine the winner. The selection criteria cover respect for human rights, the rule of law, peace and stability, and participatory democracy.
