Local Open Gov Lab (LOG)
Objective(s)
To support and assist local authorities in West Africa through digital technology to promote inclusive and participatory governance, by establishing model local authorities in the field of open local governance and promoting transparency and accountability.

Overview
The Local Open Gov Lab (LOG) is an open local governance programme in West Africa. It responds to a structural local demand from local governance institutions whilst harnessing the skills of young AfricanTivist volunteers for Open Local Governance (VAGOA). Officially launched on 29 July 2021 in Dakar, it has engaged seven partner municipalities across four countries in a historic declaration on open local governance.
CONTEXT
Local authorities in Africa face structural challenges in the areas of digital governance and administrative transparency. Citizens have few tools at their disposal to access public information and participate in the management of their local communities. The LOG project is based on the premise that if young Africans grow up in an environment of open local governance, they will, as adults, have a different relationship with public administration and democracy.
APPROACH
The programme deploys VAGOA experts — young volunteers specialising in civic tech, digital communication, participatory democracy and technological innovation — directly to partner local councils. These volunteers support local authorities in their digital transformation, promote the opening up of public data and improve citizens’ access to information.
