AfricTivistes Cybersecurity Open Classroom

Panafricain

AfricTivistes Cybersecurity Open Classroom is a theoretical and practical online learning programme that was officially launched on 8 March 2024, with over 440 learners signing up from the outset. It marks the transition of the Afrique Média Cybersécurité (AMC) programme, following a decade of face-to-face training, to a digital platform that is freely accessible to any French-speaking African citizen wishing to learn about cybersecurity.

CONTEXT

The challenges surrounding digital security in Africa are significant and wide-ranging: online censorship, state surveillance, cyberattacks, legal threats and persistent technophobia. Media professionals, journalists and activists lack the appropriate training to protect themselves effectively in an increasingly hostile digital environment. After a decade of face-to-face training courses that were geographically limited, the shift to digital platforms is enabling a massive expansion of access to this essential knowledge.

APPROACH

The programme offers courses, exercises and practical scenarios on online security, available free of charge upon registration via the academy.africtivistes.org platform. The modules cover: securing your online environment, browsing anonymously, encrypting your data, circumventing censorship and securing your communications. Learners join an online community where they can share best practices and receive regular updates on anti-censorship technologies.
