Call for applications: Africtivistes – Civic Engagement Tour, FATICK

The Africtivistes Civic Engagement Tour (#ACET) is a programme of capacity-building workshops for young people living in Senegal who are interested in civic engagement and social change. It is open to anyone aged 18 to 35 who is motivated to use digital technology to promote citizenship.
Participants are invited to share their civic engagement work with other people from their community. This will help them build a network of active contributors and sustain their work in their local area. Africtivistes, together with its partners and collaborators in Senegal, will support project leaders in developing their initiatives. At the end of the workshops, each participant will receive a set of tools to help them run social media advocacy campaigns and plan short- and long-term civic action. The hashtag #Sunucitoyennete will be used to follow the project’s activities and share the initiatives of those selected.
Each regional session will have a maximum of 25 participants.
Objectives
The project aims to develop a new generation of citizens who are engaged with social and civic issues and use digital technology to mobilise more people and increase the impact of their work.
Expected results
- Four workshops are held in Saint-Louis, Ziguinchor, Fatick and Dakar.
- A community of interest is established, with at least 100 young people.
- At least 100 young women and men learn to use social media for civic purposes.
- Four activity reports are published in the dedicated section of the Africtivistes website.
- A series of civic initiatives led by young people in Senegal is promoted on social media.
The project
The advent of digital technology in Africa has become a real asset for Africans. It enables young people to take control and participate in civic life through digital communication channels. They use blogs and social media to make their voices heard and get their message across. Others set up media or collaborative projects to build a community around a specific topic.
It is therefore necessary to create synergies between these initiatives so that they can be more effective in furthering the causes they champion and promoting social change in our communities. We must provide people with tools to help them promote their causes more effectively to their audiences and reach their target groups more quickly.
Against this backdrop, Africtivistes will organise four civic engagement workshops for young people aged 18 to 35, initially in four regions of Senegal—Dakar, Saint-Louis, Fatick and Ziguinchor—and subsequently in other West African countries. This series of workshops aims to equip committed young people with the skills to promote and strengthen civic engagement, and to help them build more responsible and sustainable communities.
