Successful applications for the Local Initiative for Justice II programme

Following the call for proposals for AFRICTIVISTES’ Local Initiative for Justice II, more than 30 applications were received. Choosing the successful projects was difficult, given the relevance of the proposals. After a rigorous selection process, five applications were selected. A grant will be awarded to each beneficiary organisation to carry out activities in its respective country from 16 March to 17 April. The projects address issues relating to justice, as well as the role and mechanisms of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).

As a reminder, Local Initiative for Justice is a workshop programme for civil society actors on issues relating to justice and human rights in Africa. It aims to provide a forum for dialogue, exchange, discussion and debate on human and peoples’ rights. To help deliver the programme, states, governments and other public institutions are invited to take part in and support these initiatives, helping to safeguard the independence and integrity of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR).
The programme is aimed in particular at Africtivistes members, partner civil society organisations and youth associations. They are invited to propose activities addressing justice issues in Africa. Local activities should promote legal instruments and the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
All projects must have a community focus, take a civic rather than institutional approach, include a digital element in their communications strategy, and have a budget of no more than US$2,000. Project leaders will receive support from Africtivistes teams in their respective countries. US$200 of the budget must be set aside exclusively for internet connectivity and online coverage of the activity, to contribute to the #CADHP4Africans campaign. Each session must have at least 30 participants.
