AfricTivistes CitizenLab Mauritania launch seminar

AfricTivistes is launching a CitizenLab on 20 February 2023 in Nouakchott, focusing on the theme “Digital technology in the service of civic engagement and participation in Mauritania.”

AfricTivistes CitizenLab Mauritania is a civic initiative whose aim is to support, guide and equip Mauritanian civil society organisations through training, the development of tools, and support for innovation and co-creation.

This innovation project aims to accelerate young people’s participatory engagement in order to consolidate democracy in Mauritania. CitizenLab Mauritania will be a hub for citizen innovation and a space for producing valuable content, drawing on digital projects dedicated to democracy. More specifically, the aim is to build the capacity of young actors within Mauritanian civil society; to foster a new dynamic of citizen participation; and to create a network of committed actors to identify, study, reflect on and propose solutions to socio-political issues in Mauritania.

The event will bring together state authorities and a significant number of key figures from Mauritanian society, such as academics, representatives from the media and civil society organisations, citizens’ movements, activists and diplomatic representatives…

During the seminar, the speakers will address various related topics through panel discussions:

• Digital democracy and the role of the media
• The role of digital technology in citizenship in Africa
• The challenges of civic engagement in Africa.

This project is being implemented with the involvement and participation of the AfricTivistes network in Mauritania, civil society media organisations and media professionals.

This event provides an opportunity, first and foremost, to call on institutional partners to facilitate access to public information and data. It is also a forum for encouraging media partners to take note of and make use of the information that will be published as part of this project. Finally, it will serve as a platform to encourage civil society organisations to take ownership of this citizen innovation lab.

About AfricTivistes

AfricTivistes is a pan-African organisation based in Dakar. It brings together bloggers and web activists from across the continent to promote and defend democratic values, human rights and good governance through digital means.

Launched in November 2015, AfricTivistes acts as a guardian of democracy across all African countries. As such, it is committed to intervening directly or advocating for the involvement of various stakeholders in the various processes of political and social change. It leads and manages projects aimed at development and citizen engagement in democratic processes. Naturally, it develops strategies aimed at monitoring – and ensuring the monitoring of – political leaders’ actions and the fulfilment of their commitments, in order to promote transparency and good governance. It serves as a showcase for enhanced citizenship in Africa.
